Sustainability is a key element of operations at Somerset House; our estates team have been working hard to produce a policy that embraces delivering a sustainable future for our 18th century building. We take care to communicate and involve our tenants and visitors, using our exhibitions and events as a means to promote awareness.
Working within the constraints of the historic buildings, we have improved the sustainable performance of our estate by reducing energy usage and increasing the quantity of waste material that is recycled to 86%. We endeavour to reduce levels of direct and indirect pollution, targeting travel policy and procurement practices to minimise the impact of transportation.
Energy savings have been achieved by improving thermal insulation and using technologies such as LED lighting, automated passive ventilation and intelligent heating and lighting controls. The courtyard is now lit by high intensity, low energy LED floodlights using 80% less energy than the previous floodlighting.
We promote awareness of all legislative, economic, technical and market developments that contribute towards sustainable development and make sure they feature in our decision making.
