Writer in Residence

Writer in Residence

Our Writer in Residence programme began in January 2008. Each year a writer is invited to curate a programme of literary talks and events, alongside working on their own writing, using Somerset House and its environs as inspiration.

Our first Writer in Residence Ruth Padel’s projects included initiating Picture This At Somerset House - Writers' Talks in The Courtauld Gallery, she also worked on That Mighty Heart: Poets' Visions of London and Darwin, Poetry & Science.

Romesh Gunesekera started his residency November 2009 and worked on several projects including Picture This..., A Flow of Words and a series of ‘salons’ around different themes and workshops with schools and community groups.

Our most recent resident, Frances Wilson, hosted Tales of the Thames, held writing workshops with school children – focusing on elements of the building and on the ice rink at Somerset House for inspiration, and was awarded the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography for her book How To Survive the Titanic during her time at Somerset House.
