Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck
Sunday 22 August
A magical introduction to opera at this early evening screening of Engelbert Humperdinck's operatic fairytale.
Based on Christmas songs written by Humperdinck's sister and the Brothers Grimm, this witty, colourful, magical performance was screened in German, with English subtitles. Directed by Laurent Pelly with a cast led by mezzo Jennifer Holloway and soprano Adriana Kucerova as the two innocent children, with Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke as the witch.
Family Workshops
Fairytale fun was had with gingerbread decorating activities and drop-in workshops to make decorative stage sets and pop-up puppets. There were also activity trails around Somerset House with puzzles and challenges along the way.
‘…this is a marvellous show, moving, entertaining and suggestive.’ Daily Telegraph
‘…the magnificent, I'm inclined to say perfect, production at Glyndebourne…’ The Spectator
‘…you'll never see or hear a better Hansel and Gretel than Jennifer Holloway and Adriana Kucerova…’ The Stage
