CCI Residency Open Call

Creative Technologies Fellowship

This fellowship in partnership with UAL Creative Computing Institute (CCI) offers a unique development and commission opportunity for an artist who is looking to explore the ways in which computational systems can be used as part of a critical practice exploring social, ecological, or environmental questions. 

Specifically aimed at artists who have an established practice and would like to deepen their engagement with contemporary computing technologies, selection was made following an open call by a panel involving academics and cultural professionals.

Fellowship recipient Louis Morlæ will receive practical and technological support over a 12-month residency across both Somerset House Studios and UAL Creative Computing Institute to develop a new experimental work which will be presented at Somerset House in Autumn 2024.  

 

WHAT THIS FELLOWSHIP INCLUDES 

  • £7,500 artist fee, £7,500 production budget 
  • Shared studio at Somerset House and access to workspace and labs at UAL  
  • Research mentorship and academic expertise from CCI: Creative ML / Robotics, XR, Philosophy of Technology, Critical Design  
  • Technical support from CCI including access to Slack / UAL channels 
  • Curatorial support for the development of the new commission at Somerset House 
  • Project development support from relevant UAL Postgraduates 
  • Access to project space (including rehearsal space and recording studio), and year-round artist development and social programmes at Somerset House Studios 
  • Participation in public outcomes at UAL Creative Computing Institute (CCI) which could include a symposium, public lecture, workshops, etc. 

ABOUT SOMERSET HOUSE STUDIOS 
Somerset House Studios is an experimental workspace in the centre of London connecting artists, makers and thinkers with audiences. Located inside the repurposed former Inland Revenue building, the Studios offer space and support to artists pushing bold ideas, engaging with urgent issues and pioneering new technologies. It is also a platform for the development of new creative projects and collaborations. Up to 70 artists are resident at any one time and are supported to develop their practice for a defined period.   

ABOUT UAL Creative Computing Institute
Working at the intersection of creativity and computational technologies, UAL Creative Computing Institute (CCI) offers innovative new courses uniting computer science and creative practice, with interdisciplinarity at the core of its educational approach. CCI's research expertise pushes the boundaries of computer science in the creative industries and the arts, shaping future technologies through creative practice. The Fellowship artist will benefit from supported access to a wide range of CCI facilities, expertise and specialist materials. The artist will join a network of critical and creative practitioners both within CCI and across the wider UAL community, for example though Supra System Studio. They will have the opportunity to present work, gain feedback, and engage in devleoping conections across the varied body of academics, technicians, students and others.
