Taking its name from the 54 countries on the continent, 1:54 returns as a leading platform for artists, galleries, curators, independent art centres and institutions dedicated to promoting African and Africa related art practices and projects.

Last October 1:54 welcomed over 5,000 visitors, including collectors, curators and critics from across the globe, who gathered to experience London’s first commercial contemporary African art fair.

Ever committed to exploring new perspectives and voices, the selected exhibitors for 1:54’s second edition will hail from global territories including Kenya, South Africa, France, Italy, Germany, UK and USA to showcase over 100 emerging and established international artists. Coinciding with Frieze Week, the new fair builds on the burgeoning popularity of contemporary African art and presents an exclusive opportunity to explore a rapidly emerging contemporary art market.

The fair’s redesign, to embrace both the East and West Wings of Somerset House, is being devised by young London based architecture and design studio, RA Projects, established in 2009 by Rashid Ali. Adjaye Associates, the practice of the award-winning architect David Adjaye, selected RA Projects for the forthcoming edition.

Accompanying the fair will be Forum. Led by Koyo Kouoh, the educational series promises to introduce a critical and insightful programme comprising artist talks, lectures, panel discussions and film screenings, presented by leading curators, artists and professionals from the international field. Retaining its position within the intimate framework of 1:54, Forum will explore new areas of discourse as a series of focal and thematic conversations. This year will give focus to artist talks as they provide firsthand access to both individual and collaborative practice. Click here for full program.

Previous participants include Hans Ulrich Obrist, Bisi Silva, Chris Dercon, Olafur Eliasson, Elvira Dyangani Ose, Edson Chagas and Otobong Nkanga.

Public tours will be available for individuals and groups (10 people or less) Wednesday – Sunday, 15.00 and 17.00. To book a tour or receive further information please contact
