Elephant Parade
July 2010
In July 2010, life size replicas of elephants were all around London. This was the work of Elephant Parade, a conservation campaign which highlighted the urgent crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant.
Each elephant was decorated by a different artist or celebrity and Somerset House had its own 'Mammoth Metaphor' white elephant located at the bottom of our Nelson stair on the ground floor. Artist Peter Beard transformed his elephant into an art piece that demonstrated his iconic photography and collage work.
Running from May to July 2010, this was London's biggest outdoor art event on record with an estimated audience of 25 million. The charity aimed to raise £2 million for the Asian elephant and benefit 20 UK conservation charities. All of the elephants were for sale by auction.
