Sitting & Looking
Until 4 September 2011
Terrace Rooms, South Wing
The interdisciplinary exhibition, curated by acclaimed furniture designers Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsey, brings together ten well-know artists displaying an unusual juxtaposition of 21st century objects including furniture, fine art photography, ceramics, jewellery, painting and textiles, some of which will be for sale, and explores the links between each art form. The curators commented:
There is often a tendency to separate creative thinking into different categories, fine art, design, and craft. We believe that the common threads that link these worlds are more interesting than the geography which separates them.
Exhibits include ‘camera-less’ experimental photography from Garry Fabian Miller, anthropomorphic furniture design classics by Italian Vico Magistretti, best-known for the Maralunga sofa, paper jewellery by Dutch artist Nel Linssen and Thomas Heatherwick’s innovative use of engineering, with his versatile seating made from planks of wood.
Also on display, will be distinguished ceramics artist Gordon Baldwin’s abstract works, witty objects from design duo El Ultimo Grito, ingenious jewellery design by David Poston, inventive paintings by Ann Sutton and Rupert Spira’s poetic pottery.
The curators invite the viewer to relate to the objects in a more intimate way; their furniture, carved from blocks of solid green oak, scorched and polished to a lustrous black finish, is interspersed throughout with viewers encouraged to sit, look and contemplate the objects.
