Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition
26 April – 12 May 2013
West Wing Galleries, West Wing
The Sony World Photography Awards are widely recognised as one of the world’s leading photography competitions and the exhibition showcasing the extraordinary award-winning and shortlisted entries.
Offering a stunning snapshot of the world in 2012, the show presented international contemporary photography from both professionals and amateurs in the fields of fashion, travel, wildlife, landscape, portraiture and current affairs. The opening weekend of the exhibition coincided with the World Photo London photography festival. As well as the opportunity to take a first look at the exhibition, visitors could participate in talks and debates hosted by expert photography practitioners over the weekend opening celebrations.
The exhibition also included a special display of work by iconic American photographer William Eggleston, who received the Outstanding Contribution to Photography award at the Sony World Photography Awards Gala Ceremony on 25 April 2013.
Recognised today as the pioneer of colour photography and the personal documentary style, William Eggleston has been producing cutting-edge work for over fifty years. Since first picking up a camera in 1957, Eggleston’s work is said to find ‘beauty in the everyday’. His images capture the ordinary world around him, creating interest through sharp observation, dynamic composition and great wit.
