Forward Arts Foundation is a charity that changes lives through poetry. Through our two major initiatives - National Poetry Day and the Forward Prizes for Poetry – we give young people the confidence to create and communicate, we strengthen communities and we support poets.

National Poetry Day, on the first Thursday of October, encourages all to enjoy, discover and share poetry. It enables thousands of celebrations in schools, libraries, parish halls, care homes and bookshops. We supply inspiration and resources - including books, films and activity packs - with the support of partners including the BBC and the Booksellers’ Association.

The Forward Prizes for Poetry are the UK’s most widely coveted poetry awards: they take place annually at the Southbank Centre. The Forward anthologies - featuring the best new poems - are studied in schools across the UK as part of the English Literature syllabus.

Our champions include Cerys Matthews, Chris Riddell and HRH Prince of Wales, who joined National Poetry Day’s 25th anniversary celebrations on 3 October 2019 by broadcasting his favourite poem on BBC Radio 2.

Arts Council England recognises us as a leader in our area through inclusion in its National Portfolio.
