When John Cusack’s character Craig Schwartz is forced to abandon his dreams of being a professional puppeteer and get a real job, he’s surprised to find that his new office includes a floor 7½. Even more inexplicable is the fact that this strange space is home to a portal that takes him somewhere very strange indeed: inside the head of John Malkovich.

And we’re right there alongside Craig, witnessing the actor’s conscious and subconscious thoughts and ideas. From here this uncontainable film continues to spin in all sorts of directions, with chimps, puppets, multiple Malkovichs, the search for eternal life and Charlie Sheen adding to the crazy unpredictability. Cameron Diaz and Catherine Keener bring unexpected comic and emotional twists and turns, when their sexual desires complicate matters even further. Both Jonze and Kaufman received Oscar nominations for directing and writing respectively, and the pair have gone on to boggle the minds of audiences and broaden the horizons of cinema with such films as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation, Her and Anomalisa. We’ve all seen odd and hard to describe films over the years, but nothing matches Malkovich.

Devilishly inventive and so far out there it's almost off the scale.
