For so many, the disarming melodies of the Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer Tems, AKA 26-year-old Temilade Openiyi, defined and soundtracked the last eighteen months, so there’s no better way to open Summer Series and celebrate the return of gigs to Somerset House.

The incredible worldwide reach of Wizkid’s single Essence catapulted Tems into the mainstream consciousness, with a fandom of A-listers, including Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Drake and Adele in rhapsodies over her mellow, velvety vocals.

Since 2018, tracks such as Mr Rebel, Try Me and the striking EP For Broken Ears have established her status within Nigeria’s alté scene, an alternative music and fashion subculture, but as one of the few recognised female producers in the country, she’s made it very much on her own terms, escaping a humdrum marketing job by studying production skills on YouTube and ultimately establishing her seat at the head of a new vanguard of Afropop. She even has her own legion of fans, affectionately known as the Rebel Gang.

Having spent three years in London as a child, we can’t wait to welcome Tems back as the opening headliner for Summer Series.

All eyes are on Nigeria’s spine tingling alté star
