Somerset House has hosted three Writers in Residence since 2008; Ruth Padel, Romesh Gunesekera and, most recently, Frances Wilson. During this time a range of literary events have been held at Somerset House, hosted and/or programmed by our writers. Some highlights from the past few years include:
Picture This at Somerset House - Writers' Talks in The Courtauld Gallery – taking place annually, this event invites writers to choose an artwork from the Courtauld Gallery collection and discuss why it excited, engaged or provoked them.
Tales of the Thames – this one-off literature day celebrated the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant in 2012, with a host of writers and historians delving deep into the riveting history of the capital’s waterway.
Somerset House is also home to the Royal Society of Literature, an organisation which was founded by King George IV in 1820, to 'reward literary merit and excite literary talent'. The RSL run a regular programme of lectures and debates. Find out about forthcoming events on their website.
