Upgrade Yourself: Inspiration | Developing Concepts and Performances with Drag Artist Crystal

18 Mar 2021

Internationally renowned Drag Artist Crystal joined us to share some of her creative career highlights to date, which have given her the reputation of being a powerful and incandescent performer, aerial circus artist, dance choreographer, lip sync star, DJ, costume & concept designer, and all-round super star!

Taking her name from the shiny, luxurious, bright and sparkling qualities of a formed crystal, she continues to draw from her childhood inspirations of strong female superheroes from fantasy comics, 80’s movies, and pop cultural icons, to build her aesthetic upon the fashion silhouettes of designers such as Thierry Mugler, and Jean Paul Gaultier, always designing for strength.

She speaks of her love for the East-London Drag community where she feels most at home, a true honest club scene that fuses messiness, heart, excitement, high fashion meets very low taste, stating ‘as an East London drag queen, you can never over-accessorise too much’.

Crystal shared her research and development processes in building concepts for her appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 1, showing us how much hard work, collaboration, and commitment, it really does take to make it happen.

You can follow Crystal’s brilliant podcast, ‘The Things That Made Me Queer’, bringing celebrity friends and very special guests to share their pop-culture references and real-life events which have shaped their queer development.
