Upgrade Yourself: Creative Industry Placements

Application deadline Tuesday 17 January 2023 at 10.00.

Our Creative Industry Placements offer five, one-year placements (six months at two organisations) to young people between the ages of 18 to 24 that give you the opportunity to really get inside how a creative business is run, from operations through to programming. All participants are paid the London Living Wage, with on the job learning that nurtures, mentors and develops participants, whilst being supported through in depth wrap around training and development. All placements work across Somerset House and are hosted by on-site organisations within our resident creative community.

WHO ARE THE HOST ORGANISATIONS?

Each year our host organisations and job roles change. You will need to apply for a minimum of two roles per each section. This year, we’re excited to be working with:

Section 1

Artillite – Sales Assistant
Bread & Butter – Junior Press Assistant
Hofesh Shechter Company – Project Administrator
ONTHEBEAT – Studio Talent Assistant
Royal Society of Literature – Marketing & Administration Assistant

Section 2

Siren – Digital Assistant
Somerset House Trust [Commercial Events] - Project and Operations Assistant
Somerset House Trust [Development] - Development Assistant
Somerset House Trust [Exhibitions] - Exhibitions Administrator
Somerset House Trust [Live Events] - Production Assistant

The skills listed for these roles are important, however we do not expect someone to have all of them or developed them to the level stated as this point in their career.

We are very keen not to exclude anyone who may be interested in applying for an opportunity with us, so please do not de-select yourself if you do not have 100% of what we are looking for as we will support and train  successful candidates as much as possible.  A desire to learn and develop will be key components during our selection process when considering an applicant’s potential to expand into the role.

THE STORY SO FAR

Working with our creative community, we designed Creative Industry Placements in 2018 with the aim to support and benefit young people who identify as belonging to communities and backgrounds that are currently underrepresented within the cultural sector* to gain access into the arts. This responds even more to the needs of young people and the sector today.

In response to the above, we are proud to be able to offer one-year opportunities for the first time, with participants varying their experience by spending six months in each organisation.

Somerset House has worked with industry leading professional Dr Nicola Sim to produce a pioneering sector report, which uses the knowledge gained from two years of our Creative Industry Placements (formally Creative Careers and Upgrade Yourself: Kickstart) to offer insights into how we can move towards a more diverse and inclusive industry.
