Application process

Applications are now open for a solo artist to join the community with a desk in a shared studio.

Please read the information below along with our application guidelines and click here to view the available studio spaces. To apply, please complete this application form no later than 18.00 on Thursday 10 May 2018.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to view the spaces and discuss their application following this date.

Please note that if your application is successful, you will be offered a studio or desk space and issued with an agreement and details for how to pay a deposit of £200 inc. VAT or 1 months’ rent inc. VAT (whichever is the greater sum). In order to secure your studio space, you must return a signed agreement along with proof of your deposit payment within 10 days of receipt of your offer.

Studio spaces will be available from 01 July 2018. By submitting an application, it is assumed that you are available to take up the space from that date.

We will endeavour to let people know as soon as possible whether their application has been successful or not. Please note that due to anticipated volume of applications, we will not be able to offer feedback to unsuccessful applicants.

Somerset House Studios is devised for artists who are pushing bold ideas, engaging with urgent issues,  pioneering new technologies, and are fully committed to exploring the potential afforded by making work within a highly selective multi-disciplinary community that feeds a public programme. Applications are welcome across all disciplines including but not limited to visual art, music and composition, performance, dance and live art, fiction and non-fiction writers, fashion, film and those working at the intersection of art and technology.  The overall balance of artists is an important factor in selecting new residents.

Applications are welcome from artists who meet the above criteria and in addition:

  • Make their primary living from their practice
  • Are willing to share their practice with a community of peers as well as a range of audiences
  • Can demonstrate that their practice will benefit from being part of a cross disciplinary creative community
  • Are over 18 years of age (there is no age maximum)
  • Are UK based. Applications are welcome from overseas artists but Somerset House Studios must be their primary place of work
  • Have carefully read the Application Guidelines and understand that their practice can be accommodated by Somerset House Studios

Eligible artists may apply for a space at Somerset House Studios for a period of up to 2.5 years. The duration proposed should relate to a planned period of activity for the artist around their own aims and objectives, which will be reviewed during the residency period.
