Somerset House Young Producers x Comuzi Project Application

  • Are you an emerging creative aged between 18-30 from an underrepresented background?

  • Are you passionate about Black heritage, histories, and cultures?

  • Are you looking for an opportunity to connect and work with other creatives?

If so, we are looking for young creatives from underrepresented* backgrounds who are interested in collaborating, creating, and producing here at Somerset House over the next year.

This project sits within our new Young Producers programme which aims to provide emerging creatives aged 18-30 who are underrepresented* in the cultural sector opportunity and space to flourish here at Somerset House. The programme offers London Living Wage paid opportunities to develop your skills and creative practice in line with Somerset House’s existing Creative Careers programme. We want to widen access to opportunities like this and remove the barriers that young people from underrepresented backgrounds face when entering the creative and cultural industries.

* Underrepresented in this context includes but is not limited to those who identify as:

•Black, Asian and/or from a minority ethnic background

• Affected by a health condition or impairment

• LGBTQ+ and/or non-binary

• Affected by homelessness

• Care-leaver

• Carer

• Unemployed and/or have received welfare benefits

• Working class and/or first in their immediate family to go to university

Project Overview

This year we are launching our new Young Producers collective which will offer paid opportunities for young people to co-produce new work as part of our cultural programme.

We are aiming to recruit 6 Young Producers with an interest in Black history, heritage and culture for this particular project as it links to our anti-racism pledge.

If this specific project isn’t right for you, there will be other opportunities to engage with our programme later on in the year. Subscribe to our Creative Careers mailing list for updates here.

This is a collaborative project co-produced with design studio and Somerset House Studios residents, Comuzi. Comuzi will work with the Young Producers to co-create a digital resource inspired by the history of Somerset House, the lived experiences of the group, their creative interests, and their research findings. In response to the Black Lives Matter campaign, we have written an anti-racism pledge which includes looking into our history with a historian/s. We would like for the historian/s to interact with this group of Young Producers in developing our understanding of Somerset House’s past.

As a Black owned business, with a background in supporting young people to create innovative solutions, we believe Comuzi are the perfect partners to mentor the Young Producers and to support the creation of something truly impactful.

It is envisioned that the resulting digital resource will be one that offers new perspectives, has a legacy and will be available for Somerset House audiences to access online.

This is a paid opportunity with Art Fund Support.
