Somerset House was once the home of three Catholic queens. Join us for a free guided tour exploring the history of the site before the current building existed.

Historical Highlights Tours, Thursdays at 13.15 and 14.45 & Saturdays at 12.15, 13.15, 14.15 and 15.15

Please note that on Saturday 21 July 2018 there are two historical tours tours taking place at 12.15 and 14.15 and two Somerset House Studios tours at 13.15 and 15.15.

In approximately one hour, you'll discover evidence of Tudor intrigue and Georgian Enlightenment, scientific curiosity and naval power, extravagant entertainments and 'the King's Shilling', as we lead you from the airy lightwells of graceful staircases to the atmospheric Deadhouse.

Somerset House Studios Tours
On the third Saturday of each month, in place of our regular tours visitors can discover how we’ve transformed this wing of our building into a working space for creatives in the heart of the city by joining one of two Somerset House Studio tours.

The next Somerset House Studios Tours are at 13.15 & 15.15 on 21 July 2018. Tickets will be available 30 minutes before each tour from the Information Desk in the Seamen’s Hall.

Educational Exhibition Tours
Enrich your students’ visit with a guided tour of our exhibitions, highlighting key moments and insights.

We can provide introductory tours of our exhibitions for schools, colleges or universities. These last approximately 20 minutes and are free of charge; (with admission ticket) however they must be booked in advance and may not be available at very busy times.

To arrange a tour please contact us with the name of your educational institution and course, the date you would like to visit and the size of your group.

Please note that large groups may have to be divided into smaller groups.
A confirmation email will be sent be sent to you giving details of how to plan your visit within a week of your booking.

Private Exhibition Tours
Enhance your exhibition visit with a bespoke guided tour. We are able to offer in- depth tours of  selected exhibition for private groups. These last approximately 45 minutes and must be booked in advance.

The cost is £200 for a minimum of 10 visitors, and up to £250 for a maximum of 20 visitors (admission not included).
Please note that large groups (20 or more) may be divided into smaller groups at busy times.
