Random Acts is Channel 4’s TV and online short film strand, showcasing some of the boldest work from animators, artists and writers around the UK.

With each of tonight’s films lasting roughly five minutes, this is a chance to preview some thought-provoking work from the class of 2019.

Expect comedy from Jack Rooke, homoerotic wrestling from Dann Parry, emotional animation from Jenny Wright, paternal confrontation in the Scottish wilderness from Zhang + Knight, and the dulcet tones of Julian Barratt. After the screening, Random Acts’ Jake Cunningham will be joined by some of the directors and stars of the films to talk about their work.

This event is part of Film4 Summer Screen's Behind the Screen talk series, and includes a complimentary drink.

SWEEP AWAY HUNGRY GHOSTS | DIR. ZHANG + KNIGHT

Set in remote Scotland, a grown man regresses into an imagined rendition of his childhood where he cares for the tormented ghost of his cross-dressing father. Occupying an uncanny space, imbued with themes of traditional Chinese filial piety, this experimental film explores the complex process of embracing a parent’s gender identity.

LOCK HORNS | DIR. DANN PARRY

Two wrestlers approach each other to battle for male dominance, but soon the fight descends into something even more animalistic. New animation from Dann Parry, this animated commentary on hyper-masculinity and aggression shows how what can begin as a display of strength, ‘manliness’ and heterosexuality can quickly blur into sexualisation and homoerotism – sometimes the very thing it is trying not to be.

DAWN OF A NEW GAY | DIR. ROSIE GAUNT-MATHIESON

Comedian Jack Rooke goes back to uni to tell a tale of sexual enlightenment in the pre-Brexit, London-Olympic bliss of 2012. Featuring harpist Alexander Thomas, this tale of drugs, debauchery and dating apps is a heart-warming and romantic modern day diary entry, from one of the UK's most exciting comedians and spoken word performers.

MY MOTHER’S EYES DIR. JENNY WRIGHT

From animator Jenny Wright comes a story about motherhood and loss in an abstracted world of childhood memory, creating a delicate blend of intimacy and emotion, told through beautifully simple line drawings.

FUTURE PERFECT | DIR. SEAN MCKENNA

Narrated by Julian Barratt, Future Perfect follows a child's drawing of their parents as it is created, hung on a wall, then placed in a time capsule where it waits as the earth dries to a husk and shrugs us off. Discovered by some future aliens they then use the drawings as the blueprint for a twisted new version of humanity.
