Film4 Summer Screen | Essential Information

What time should I arrive?

Relax, settle yourself in with your picnic and soak up the atmosphere from 19.00 when the doors open.

There's a different, top class DJ each night from 19.00 and the film begins around 21.00 as the sun goes down.

What should I bring?

This year there's an expanded range of seating options including beanbags and director's chairs that can be booked when you purchase your film tickets. Click here for more information on all seating and dining upgrades.

Please be aware that unless you purchase a seat or beanbag when buying your ticket for the screening, there are no other seats available in the courtyard; chairs, large items or portable furniture, inflatable or otherwise, are not allowed. You are welcome to bring your own blankets, small cushions (no larger than 50cm x 50cm) and self-collapsing backrests to sit on. There is no cloakroom onsite.

On the night blankets, backrests and cushions can be purchased onsite for £5.00–£15.00.

Food & Drink

There's a fully licenced bar and coffee point onsite, along with a selection of pop-up food, including Jimmy Garcia's BBQ Club serving fully loaded flame-grilled burgers, hot dogs and fries; and Little Moons' mochi-wrapped artisan gelato.

There are also a range of hampers and dining packages that can be pre-booked when you purchase. Click here for more information on all seating and dining upgrades.

You're welcome to bring your own food and drink, but no glass (including jars), crockery or sharp knives are allowed into the courtyard. Customers are welcome to bring alcohol onto the site, but we reserve the right to use our discretion, and may confiscate anything deemed excessive. If you bring a glass bottle in, we will ask you to decant into plastic on arrival.

Bag searches will be made on arrival and unsuitable items confiscated. Any such items will be available to collect at the end of the evening.

Please note we operate a cashless bar.

The screenings are open-air and screenings will go ahead whatever the weather – come rain or come shine. The audience area is not covered, so please come prepared as wet weather provisions are not provided.

Entry Information
  • No cameras, video cameras or audio recording devices can be used during the event.
  • Any confiscated items need to be picked up on the evening. Somerset House does not take responsibility for items left on site.
  • There is no re-admission. Please note that food delivery, including Deliveroo, won’t be permitted into the event.
  • Due to the nature of the event, pets, babies and children under the age of four are not permitted to attend the event.
  • When leaving please consider our neighbours and leave Somerset House quietly and in an orderly manner.

There is a raised viewing platform which can hold four disabled patrons and their companion. If you would like to book a place on the platform, please inform us at the point of booking.

For those wanting to sit in the courtyard, there is a section by the chairs for wheelchair users and their guests to sit together.

For selected films, we will have a number of audio-described headsets available. If you would like to request a headset for your chosen film, please contact the Box Office. There will be a cash deposit taken at the event, which will be refunded after the return of the headset.

Please check the age certificate of the film you are booking. Entrance to double bill programmes is restricted to the film with the highest certification, even if you are only planning to stay for one film.

The certification of premieres is to be confirmed at time of going on sale. Should certification change, Somerset House will advise all customers in advance and refund any ticket sold to anyone below the age of certification.

Behind the Screen

Behind the Screen brings the world of cinema into sharper focus with a diverse and entertaining pre-screening programme of talks from film industry creatives.
