“I became a photographer because of the young people I followed.”

Celebrating our current exhibition Malick Sidibé: The Eye of Modern Mali running from 06 Oct 2016 –15 Jan 2017 we are proud to screen Dolce Vita Africana.

Directed by Cosima Spender in 2008, this fascinating film follows the master photographer as he revisits many of the locations made famous through his iconic images of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Synonymous with youth, music and leisure, Sidibé’ s photographs capture a generation embracing a new-found freedom, and the film features interviews with many of his subjects, looking back upon their formative years in Bamako, Mali.

This screening runs at 62 mins and will be followed by a Q & A with the director and journalist Teju Adeleye.

Cosima Spender was born in Italy in an English artists’ family, moving to England aged fourteen. A degree in anthropology and art history sparked her interest in story-telling, identity and traditions. Graduating from the National Film and Television School in 2001 she directed three documentaries for BBC Storyville (Without Gorky, Dolce Vita Africana, and The Importance of Being Elegant) and commercial work in the music world. Her most recent film, Palio, described as "Rocky on Horseback" by The NY Times was critically acclaimed, theatrically released and is available on iTunes.
