Photo London 2024 Talks | Sat 18 May

The 2024 Talks Programme promises a strong line-up of speakers for its ninth edition. Curated by Thames & Hudson, with contributions from Photo London partners Nikon and FT Weekend, this year is free of charge to ticket holders.

The popular Talks Programme provides listeners with unique insights from some of the world’s most exciting voices in the medium. Expect to hear lively talks, dynamic debates and in-depth discussions to broaden and deepen your understanding of photography.

Talk tickets are free, these can be booked via the Somerset House website. 

Talk tickets do not include admission to the Fair. You must purchase a Day Pass ticket alongside your Talk ticket for the same day as the talk is taking place. Talks start promptly in The Screening Room at the scheduled time please arrive five minutes before the talk starts to avoid disappointment.

Thames & Hudson presents: GEORGE HOYNINGEN-HUENE: THE PHOTOGRAPHER WHO DEFINED AN ERA
Specialists Susanna Brown, William A. Ewing and Keith Lodwick discuss the life and legacy of George Hoyningen-Huene (1900-68), one of Vogue’s first and most influential fashion and portrait photographers. During his glittering career in Europe and America, Hoyningen-Huene collaborated with the likes of Cecil Beaton, Horst P. Horst and Lee Miller, and befriended Hollywood’s brightest stars. He travelled the world and published books of his images from Greece, the Levant, Mexico, and the African continent. This talk celebrates the major new publication George Hoyningen-Huene: Photography, Fashion, Film, the first book of the photographer's work in four decades.

Charlotte Jansen presents: PARENTING IN A CLIMATE EMERGENCY - ANDI GÁLDI VINKÓ IN CONVERSATION WITH ALONA PARDO
Parenting, Photography and the Climate Emergency award-winning artist Andi Galdi Vinko (Sorry I Disappeared I Gave Birth But Now I'm Back) and collaborator HIN discuss their latest body of work (debuting at Photo London with Erika Deák Gallery) with curator Alona Pardo.

Nikon presents: HEATHER AGYEPONG - THERAPEUTIC CHARACTER CREATION 
Award winning visual artist & actor Heather Agyepong discussing her latest self portrait series ego death exploring Carl Jung's concept of the Shadow, unpacking repressed and shameful parts of ourselves and how photography bridges the gap to self acceptance. The series was part of the Jerwood/Photoworks Award.

Nikon presents: ALIA ALI -SPEAKING IN IMAGE
Alia Ali’s practice harnesses a variety of art mediums- and yet all her work integrates photography and is rooted in its historical narrative– even before 1816.

Photography is the foundation. She describes it as “the core, the language– the bones” of her practice. It is not the parentheses, but rather the syntax that draws together a wide range of mediums and makers. She collaborates across the globe with carvers, weavers, printers and fabricators. Join us in experiencing the world and her practice through her Nikon lens.

In her talk, Alia revisits the concept of the image, the imagination and photograph as a practice, art form and voice.

The lan Parry Photojournalism Grant presents the remarkable 2023 recipient Nikoletta Stoyanova in discussion with the Guardian's Head of Photography Fiona Shields, and the CEO of Legacy of War Foundation Giles Duley. Together, they will delve into the power of visual storytelling, the challenges faced by today's photojournalists, and the enduring impact of capturing moments that shape our world.
