Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan plays Jeffrey, a young man who returns to his hometown when his father suffers a stroke. He’s quickly drawn into a suburban mystery when he discovers a severed ear in a local field, hooking up with detective’s daughter Sandy (Laura Dern) to investigate further. What they discover puts both their innocence and lives at risk, stumbling into a shadow world hidden behind the bright and optimistic one that they know.

Isabella Rossellini and Dennis Hopper provide intense and disturbing performances as the film turns into a terrifying cross between film noir and horror, with Lynch creating a film that seems to exist entirely inside a dream. Throughout it all floats the sweet, strange beauty of Angelo Badalamenti’s soundtrack, complemented by Roy Orbison and Bobby Vinton classics, which adds to the eerie atmosphere and will no doubt haunt you for days to come. This is a film that will make you look at the world around you in a different way, starting the moment you step into the Somerset House courtyard and into David Lynch’s world.

Every viewing yields new insights. A berserko modern classic.
