Film4 Summer Screen DJs and Live Music

Before the film, from 19.00 until sunset, you’re invited to settle in and soak up the summertime courtyard atmosphere with live musicians and guest DJs performing sets inspired by each night’s film.

We’re excited to announce that live music will grace Film4 Summer Screen for the first time. Swedish-Iranian Shida Shabahi will dazzle with contemporary classical music played live on piano (appropriately for The Piano). And London-based drummer Kwesi Yvorra and his band Nuvorrian will perform on the evening of the Black Panther screening.

Our decks will feature an eclectic mix of DJs from London’s favourite parties, including Sink the Pink’s Jonbenet Blonde (before Clueless); emerging stars of radio including NTS’ Zakia Sewell (This is England) and Balamii's Aisha Zoe (Inna de Yard); and Rough Trade DJs before Reservoir Dogs.

LOU HAYTER | PAIN AND GLORY | THU 08 AUG 2019

Lou Hayter is a celebrated DJ and musician who has performed at some of the best parties and clubs the world has to offer. Lou's selections takes in 60s/70s/80s soul, funk, modern r&b, perfect pop, disco, classic hip hop, house and any combination of the above. Dubbed ‘the style world's favourite DJ’ by the Evening Standard, she has performed for an impressive list of clients including Miu Miu, Chloe, Paul Smith, The V&A and the Cannes Film Festival. Lou recently released an album with Jean Benoit Dunckel from the seminal French act Air under the name Tomorrow's World to great critical acclaim, she toured the world as keyboardist in the Mercury-nominated band New Young Pony Club, released a record with Defected Records as The New Sins and has her debut solo album set for release in 2019.

Kwesi Yvorra is a London based Drummer /Producer, leading his talented three piece outfit, Nuvorrian. His sound is a mad mix of afro futuristic sounds and propulsive grooves, incorporating a unique blend of the raw elements of funk jazz, hip hop, progrock, and drum & bass. His band brings a fresh approach to the game, challenging the longstanding musical stereotypes.

Eat Your Own Ears is known for promoting an eclectic mix of artists, from Four Tet and The Horrors to Hot Chip and Animal Collective. Their DJs set are equally eclectic, covering everything from afrobeat, funk and soul to post punk, rock’n’roll, kraut-rock and disco. EYOE DJs have played sets at V&A Lates, the Tate Modern, Field Day Festival and The Warehouse Project, as well as hosting a monthly all vinyl residency at Ridley Road Market Bar for over three years.

CHAKA KHAN'T (DALSTON SUPERSTORE) | THE PRINCESS BRIDE | SUN 11 AUG 2019

Chaka Khan’t cut her teeth as a DJ at Dalston Superstore’s Tuesday night party Disco Spritz in 2015, and soon moved on to playing well established nights Homodrop, Discosodoma, Patsy and more. She has since since gone on to DJ at London institutions The Glory, Savage Disco and Egg nightclub, as well as hosting radio shows on NTS and Balamii. Her club night Mints has welcomed guests ranging from Ruf Dug to FYI Chris and CC:Disco. In addition to DJing, she performs regularly as drag queen alter Yoko Fomo, who is also known to make regular cameos behind the decks! Expect a cosmic tour through the far reaches of synch-pop, post-punk and art-pop as she takes to the decks to get the nostalgia flowing ahead of our screening of The Princess Bride!

WILL WHITE (PROPELLERHEADS) | THE MATRIX | MON 12 AUG 2019

A longstanding dance music devotee, Will White found his initial talent for beats under the instruction of his jazz drummer father. Will’s machine-like drumming attracted the attention of Alex Gifford and they quickly found a synergy practicing in the basement of a shaken Georgian town house in Bath, before going on to form Propellerheads in 1995. One of the highlights of the electronic duo act’s successful career was when their track ‘Spybreak!’ became widely known after its use in the lobby scene in The Matrix. Will joins us for Film4 Summer Screen, returning to his original love of house music. His DJ sets are now a bass-filled mix of house driven sounds with a retro influence which are emphasised by his experience in sonics and sound quality.

CLAIRE M SINGER | GOD’S OWN COUNTRY | TUE 13 AUG 2019

A composer, producer and performer of acoustic and electronic music, film and installations, Claire’s recent work has focused on a mix of organ, cello and electronics. Her debut album Solas was released on Touch in 2016 followed by her second release Fairge in 2017. Performances and commissions include Tate Modern London; Fylkingen Institute Stockholm; Ceremony Hall Austin, TX; Muziekgebouw Aan' t Amsterdam, Oude Kerk Amsterdam and the Barbican. In 2017 she was a recipient of the inaugural Oram Awards for her innovation in sound and music.

ZAKIA SEWELL | THIS IS ENGLAND | WED 14 AUG 2019

Zakia began DJing while working behind the counter at Honest Jon's Records and producing for NTS Radio. Since then, she's gone on to play some of London's top venues, from Corsica Studios to audiophile hang out Brilliant Corners, and is a resident DJ at the Jazz Cafe. It's fair to say Zakia's knowledge of music is vast, crossing all genres from all corners of the world. Selecting in the club or live on-air, you can expect the unexpected – her weekly NTS show Questing explores deep and cosmic sounds, from spiritual jazz to psychedelic folk and dub, while Zakia’s DJ sets explore global connections, soulful vibrations and heavy percussion.

OH ANNIE OH | STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON | THU 15 AUG 2019

Seoul-born, Toronto-bred, London-based Oh Annie Oh is a DJ, radio show host and club promoter. She runs and DJs Night Dreams, a bi-monthly haven for hip hop, grime, trap, r&b and future beats at Ace Hotel London. Specialising in new and old school hip hop and trap, Annie is a resident DJ on Rinse FM, has performed at renowned London venues including Village Underground, Electrowerkz, The Roundhouse, Borderline, Brixton Jamm and O2 Brixton Academy; and has performed live at festivals including Lovebox, Field Day, Rize, Visions and The Great Escape.

MARCY & RACHAEL (RYE WAX) | BEFORE SUNRISE + BEFORE SUNSET | FRI 16 AUG 2019

A DJ who loves to make people dance, Marcy's DJ sets always aim to share with the crowd an eclectic selection of records. She promotes her own in south east London called Rotations, where the only plan is to have fun and play B2B with friends.

She kicked off her radio career with a monthly residency on Balamii Radio. Now based on Netil Radio every other month, she's normally joined by guests like Gigi FM, Truska or Cabasa but sometimes flying solo too. Always keen to meet new people for new adventures, you can find her behind the bar in the Rye Wax basement where she works with the best family ever.

Rachael cut her teeth in the glitter filled gay bars of east London, peddling spangly disco, chiffon infused Italo and the campest hi-nrg known to man via her very first party Les Poppeurs at world renowned LGBT venue Dalston Superstore. Now based with at Rye Wax, she's started throwing the secretly feminist rave Il Telefono, highlighting amazing non male DJs like DJ Bus Replacement Service, Luz (Room 4 Resistance/Berlin) and iona (Field Manuevers/UK). This commitment to true underground music combined with a lasting affection for the roots of dance music in queer disco informs all her DJ sets and radio shows.

VOYS (RYE WAX/SOUVENIR) | GET OUT + THEY LIVE | SAT 17 AUG 2019

By day Voys is Claire, the shop manager of Rye Wax records in Peckham and the co-founder/director of The Run Out – a non-profit, free festival reacting to the growing commercialisation of Record Store Day by supporting independent music culture via local artists and labels. She is half of DJ duo Souvenir who have a monthly residency on Balamii radio and frequently play at festivals and parties in London and beyond.

ROUGH TRADE DJ BEN MONAGHAN PRESENTS: K-BILLY’S SUPER SOUNDS OF THE 70s | RESERVOIR DOGS | MON 19 AUG 2019

DJ Ben Monaghan brings Quentin Tarantino’s fictional radio station to life with a reimagined K-Billy’s style DJ set. Cutting audio snippets, lost adverts and introductions in the spirit of the Reservoir Dogs radio host Steven Wright, Ben attempts to segue and speculate on tracks that could have made the station’s playlist – blending a  mix of 70s soft rock, acid-country-psych and swamp-soul-funk, the music obsessive soundtracks the airwaves in anticipation of Tarantino’s ensemble heist masterpiece.

SHIDA SHAHABI | THE PIANO | TUE 20 AUG 2019

Shida Shahabi is a pianist and composer currently based in Stockholm. Growing up in the Swedish capital with Iranian parents, Shida listened to a broad range of music – surrounded by 70s Persian pop, while watching countless hours of MTV, and exploring her parents’ extensive CD collection of classical composers. Shida signed to 130701 in February 2018, after the label were floored by the beauty of her album recordings. Her debut album, Homes was released to significant acclaim in October that year, alongside her first solo live performances.

AISHA ZOE (DJ) + WINSTON McANUFF PERFORMANCES | INNA DE YARD | WED 21 AUG 2019

Aisha Zoe is a musician, DJ and intriguing performer currently hosting the extol dual-weekly show The Full English Breakfast Show on South London’s finest underground station Balamii Radio. Bringing in sumptuous talents from all over the world to the homely market studio next to Rye Wax Records, Aisha has made quite a mark after less than a year on the show. She has been DJing at some of London’s most Prestigious venues and events – XOYO, 9 Swallow Street, Corsica Studios and The Jazz Café.


Before we screen the UK premiere of Inna de Yard, a feel-good documentary love letter to the music of Jamaica, we welcome musicians from the film. Enjoy a special music performance (from 20.25 - 20.40) from two the legendary Winston McAnuff, also known under the stage name Electric Dread. Winston McAnuff is a living legend of reggae and dub music, and Jamaican singer Jah9 will join Peter Webber onstage to introduce the film. Jah9's music is influenced by the vocals of Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, and the rhythms of dancehall and Sizzla.
