This triple Oscar-winner follows an African-American boy’s journey from youth to young manhood is one of the most talked-about and deeply-felt films of recent times.

One of the most talked-about and deeply-felt films of recent times, this triple Oscar-winner (for Film, Supporting Actor and Adapted Screenplay) follows an African-American boy as he travels from youth to young manhood in a threatening Miami neighbourhood. We first meet Chiron as a child learning to outwit bullies and look after his drug-addicted mother. His vulnerability leads him to be taken under the wing of neighbourhood dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali), a father-figure who shapes the rest of his life. From there we meet Chiron again as a teenager discovering his sexuality and then, in the film’s third chapter, as a grown man whose meeting with an old friend unlocks deep feelings.

Director Barry Jenkins brings both strength and sensitivity to this story of street-survival and personal awakening, using a three-part structure that offers different perspectives on Chiron’s life and conjuring powerful emotions as he draws the audience into the world of his memorable characters. An intimate film that’s even more stirring when shared with others - experience Moonlight in the moonlight at Somerset House.

A mix of soul and spiritual jazz will set the scene for our screening of Barry Jenkins’ modern masterpiece.

The combination of artistry and emotional directness in this film is overwhelming.
