The Guardian

From director Ruben Östlund, the creator of the 2014 hit Force Majeure, comes a seriously hilarious and profound new satire set in the art world. Taking place in and around a modern-art museum, Östlund’s film balances big laughs with unsettling set-pieces as it follows a successful curator preparing to launch a prestigious exhibition while at the same time tracking down a mugger who stole his phone. When a PR initiative plunges the museum into crisis, the curator finds himself in a series of situations that are both darkly amusing and highly compromising.

Danish actor Claes Bang is brilliant in the lead role (although the action is broadly spread across a number of characters and situations) and there are standout turns from Dominic West (The Wire; The Affair) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men). A deep seam of humour runs through this penetrating and sympathetic look at the human condition; Östlund’s stunning moral odyssey turns exquisite embarrassment into an art-form and places him firmly in the top flight of international filmmakers.

Expect a pulsating mix of disco, house and techno beats to set the mood for Ruben Östlund’s gripping and darkly satirical art-world exposé.

I’m making fun of everyone. I’m very thorough in that way. No one escapes from this satiric approach.
