We are looking to recruit 5 pioneering young people to take up paid work placements starting on Monday 04 June 2018.

If you are ready for a challenge but are you struggling to get a job in the creative sector, the Creative Career Academy at Somerset House may be for you.

Somerset House Trust is working with 5 partner organisations to work placements that will provide much-needed opportunities for young people. They will be employed by Somerset House Trust for up to 9-months. During this time, they will have a chance to work within two separate organisations based at Somerset House. These full-time placements will be paid at the London Living Wage (£10.20 per hour).  They are an opportunity to develop experience and skills that can fulfil future career ambitions.

Up to 5 young people will be recruited together as a group of peers who can support each other.  They will benefit from a full induction programme, in-house mentoring and on-the-job training.  Opportunities to work closely with industry professionals will provide an unrivalled experience.  Somerset House’s rich cultural programme of exhibitions and live events will also provide a unique backdrop to the placements.

Is there any support for me to apply?
You are welcome to join us at the Creative Job Studio events where we have CV skills and advice for applications which is open to all.  

When does the work placement start?
The start date is Monday 04 June 2018 for up to 9 consecutive months.

What qualifications will I need?
You will have ideally achieved at least a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject, or similar.  However, we are also looking for positive attitude, aptitude and willingness to learn.

Do I need to have the right to work in the UK?
Yes – this is essential.  You must have proof of an EU citizenship or UK visa with the right to full-time work.

Where will I be based?
You will be based at Somerset House in central London, working with two of resident organisations that are also based on-site.  The address is: Somerset House, Strand, London, WC2R 1LA

Who will I be employed by?
You will be employed by Somerset House Trust with points of contact in HR and the Creative Careers Academy team. Your specific work placement may be hosted by any resident partner organisation that has joined the scheme.

What are you looking for?
We are looking for ambitious and motivated individuals who are willing to be pioneers on this new scheme. You may have had some previous experience, however a willingness to learn and work hard is equally important.  The placements aim to provide relevant experience and contacts for those considering a career in the creative sector. 

What will I be paid?
It is a full-time work placement. Participants will be paid the London Living Wage, which is £10.20 per hour, paid at the end of each month for up to 9 months.

What hours will I work?
You will be expected to work 37.5 hours which equates to full-time hours a week working either 09.00-17.30 or 10.00-18.30 with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break (exact hours to be discussed with your employer). However, working patterns may be subject to change depending on projects and deadlines, on so flexibility is important.

Will I get holiday?
You are entitled to up to 21 days of paid holiday including bank holidays during the 9-months.

Will I be offered training?
You will receive in-house training to develop skills that will enable you to carry out tasks during your placement, such as introductions to specific IT software. The training will be provided by the Somerset House Trust and by the placement employers.  You will also have an opportunity to join staff tours of on-site exhibitions, the historical building and Somerset House Studios. 

What support is on offer during the work placement?
In addition to training, you will have monthly meetings with a mentor from Somerset House Trust.  You will also be supported by the Creative Careers Academy team and will be encouraged to build a peer network with other people on placements.

What can I expect to get out of the programme?
You will be supported to develop your professional skillset that will enhance your future career progression. You will work alongside leading industry professionals and you will contribute to creative organisations.  At the end of the placement you will gain realistic insights into the potential of your career. As the first of our Creative Careers Academy alumni you will also establish a professional network that will grow as you develop your career. 

Can I choose the residents I work with?
No, the information supplied on application forms, CV and interviews will enable the selection panel to match skills and experience to the placements.  We are working hard to make sure the placements are of equal interest and quality.   

If I’m unsuccessful will I get feedback on my application?
Due to the number of anticipated applications, we will only offer feedback to candidates who reach the interview stage.

Will I get a permanent job after my internship?
No. This is a 9-month work placement between two different organisations. There is no guaranteed job at the end of it. Instead it will be a great opportunity to make contacts, build networks and to gain unrivalled work experience that will support career development.
