This September, Amy Poon brings the beloved family legacy to one of London’s most iconic cultural destinations, unveiling Poon’s at Somerset House within the historic New Wing.
The menu will embrace the warmth and simplicity of Chinese home cooking; comforting, nourishing, and often overlooked in the West. Set to feature signature claypot rice, introduced to the UK more than fifty years ago by Amy’s father, Bill Poon; the much‑anticipated Magic Soup, which Amy likens to “as fundamental to a traditional Chinese meal as Yorkshire pudding to a Sunday roast”; beloved wind‑dried meats, crafted to the recipe of her grandfather; and playful “siu2 sik6” small plates in the bar area, whimsically named after their backstories—like “the hill that Amy didn’t die on.”
To pair, a thoughtfully curated wine list will focus on cool-climate wines, championing family-owned producers and celebrating biodynamic practices with pours that demonstrate the versatility of wines with Chinese dishes. In addition a unique cocktail list, playing on unexpected Chinese flavours like “sweet and sour” and pickled ginger.
Within a carefully crafted 60‑seat setting designed in collaboration with Janet McGlennon Interiors, the restaurant will open into a cosy, library‑style room with a communal table, before leading into an open kitchen and dining area adorned with family photographs, art, and heirlooms.
For a more bespoke and private experience the intimate dining room for up to 24 guests will also be available as a space for book launches, readings, masterclasses, wine tastings and exhibitions, and other events which will be hosted by Amy and friends throughout the year.
