Sustainability at Skate

In our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, Somerset House has been collaborating with sustainable energy consultants since 2022 to systematically reduce our organisational carbon footprint.

We are excited to share our continued progress in enhancing the sustainability of SKATE, building on the achievements outlined in our 2024 update. In 2025, we have made further strides toward reducing our environmental impact and strengthening our commitment to sustainability.

This year, we achieved a significant 20% reduction in electricity consumption compared to 2023, driven by our modernised chiller technology. To support further reductions, we have increased monitoring of electricity, waste and water usage, enabling us to identify additional opportunities for energy savings. A key focus has been streamlining indoor heater usage, which we forecast will yield substantial energy reductions.

We have also optimised our infrastructure approach by reducing the number of temporary units built and utilising more existing spaces within the venue. This shift has lowered carbon emissions during the build and break phases, reduced electricity use during the event, and shortened the build schedule by two days, further minimising our environmental footprint.
