Hyperdub globalists Okzharp & Manthe Ribane and critically acclaimed vocalist and producer Lafawndah head up the Saturday ASSEMBLY line up with this very special double bill.

Performing their recent Hypderdub-released debut album Closer Apart, the collaborative project of South London-based Cape Town musician, DJ and producer Okzharp and Manthe Ribane, a Soweto-born performer working across film, music, dance and performance art, bring their blend of South African and UK sounds to ASSEMBLY.

With her live shows becoming an ever-evolving testing ground for ruptures in the seamless concert experience, vocalist and producer Lafawndah joins Okzharp and Manthe Ribane in this ASSEMBLY double-billing. Premiering new material, Lafawndah presents her widescreen artistic vision: saturated and bracing, sensual and imposing.

Okzharp and Manthe Ribane - Closer/Apart

Also one-third of Hyperdub trio LV, Okzharp has created film soundtracks, audio installations and has collaborated with Zaki Ibrahim, Errol Bellot, Dandelion, Quarta 330, Zomby, Untold, Yungun, Pinch, Micachu, Das Kapital, Trim and Mumdance. Making a name for herself across the creative spectrum, Manthe Ribane has toured as a dancer with Die Antwoord and been a key member in some of South Africa’s contemporary movements, from the fashion/art squadron The Smarteez to the dance/performance-art group V.I.N.T.A.G.E. She was recently awarded a ‘Young Inspiration’ award for her work by Red Bull South Africa.

Lafawndah’s journey to her current incarnation as a devotional pop polymath has wound as unpredictably as her compositional style. From a childhood spent under the tutelage of legendary percussion instructor Aderfi Aksil through to her controversial tenure at the short- lived but influential Dassin Sakina Institute, Lafawndah’s traversing of musical and artistic milieus has been defined by a freedom of tone, surrealist sense of space, and assured manipulation of formal and psychological tension.

KENZO - Le Renard Bleu by Partel Oliva ft. Midori Takada & Lafawndah

Subsequent to the release of her self-titled and TAN EPs, the creative trajectory of Lafawndah has both fanned out and sharpened, revealing an artist whose vision has only intensified as it expands. Her recent collaborative film and album Le Renard Bleu with legendary composer Midori Takada alongside the HONEY COLONY mixtape series has put the full extent of Lafawndah's dense, baroque, maximalist production and arrangement style on display.
