Grounding Practice: Canal Studies with Harun Morrison

Artist and writer Harun Morrison convenes a series of discussions, walks and screenings to consider the London canal system.

Thinking of the canals as a material network, or mesh, canal studies offers ways of thinking about contemporary London housing politics, the current energy crisis and histories of industrial labour through the waterways.

Across intersecting angles, the sessions will explore the politics of boat-living, canal and river administration, energy politics, maintenance, the contradictions of being off-grid, the canal-as-ecosystem and its post-industrial legacy.
Ahead of each offsite session, information on meeting location, walking route and any relevant resources will be shared directly with participants. This series is envisioned to be best experienced by returning audiences - a discounted full series ticket for all four events is encouraged, with individual session tickets also available. All towpaths and walking routes will be wheelchair and pushchair accessible.

Artist Zofia Kulik joins curator Fiona Rogers to discuss her extensive body of work, journeying from her earlier works as part of the avant-garde duo KwieKulik, to the development of her solo career in the late 1980s. Inspired by eroticism, feminism, and the political and social developments of post-war Poland, Kulik's work offers a radical critique of not only what it means to be an artist and a woman, but of what it means to be human.

Photographer Sakir Khader and curator Aya Musa come together in a conversation moderated by curator Dalia Al-Dujaili, focusing on their collaboration on Sakir’s first solo museum exhibition Yawm al-Firak, Arabic for Day of Separation. They will share their experiences working as photographers in conflict zones, discuss the responsibilities of institutions, and explore the ethical choices involved in presenting complex narratives in cultural spaces.
