3ETV

In 1966, 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering brought artists, engineers and scientists together in New York for a collaboration that introduced closed-circuit television (CCTV), fibre optics, infrared cameras and wireless transmitters into live performance for the first time. It kickstarted nearly two decades of broadcast experimentation through E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology). Sixty years later, closed circuit tv is no longer closed, and anyone with a phone can broadcast. It’s democratised, networked, on demand, always on. 

3ETV is an international collaboration between Somerset House Studios (London), HEK (House of Electronic Arts, Basel), M+ (Hong Kong), Onassis ONX (Athens/New York) & Pioneer Works (New York), a decentralised curated broadcast exploring how performance and technology have evolved in an always on world.

A bespoke 9 channel station will allow audiences to navigate their own viewing experience from any location, moving between commissioned artist responses and provocations, artworks, experimental shorts, archival material, and live capture of the one-off performances at 3 Evenings.

During the three nights of 3 Evenings in London (October 16-18), remote audiences will also be able to view the performances at Wapping Hydraulic Power Station live from multiple angles via 3ETV, alongside the wider online programme. Wapping and 3ETV will become a networked space for the duration, with video works and performances broadcast into and out of the live event, creating a distinct but connected audience experience for in person and digital audiences alike.
