Creatives, Collaborators and Catalysts: Contexts and Challenges of Championing Congolese Culture – The Defise Foundation
In recent years, visual artists from the Democratic Republic of Congo have been gaining increasing visibility on the global contemporary stage. From better-known names to emerging talents, these artists are increasingly appearing in international art fairs and exhibitions. In 2026, the DRC hosted its first-ever national pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and in London during 1-54, Almas Art Foundation kicks off their season celebrating Congo.

However, Congolese artists still do not have the same levels of representation as those from many other African countries, and there are challenges faced both by the artists themselves and those trying to showcase and celebrate their work.
This conversation will explore the context(s) in which contemporary Congolese art operates, both locally and globally, as well as delving into ways in which people invested in this community are working together to support and uplift these talented artists.
