A series of new works from Studio resident artists Alan Warburton, Album Corp and FRAUD, commissioned with the generous support of the London Community Foundation and Cockayne - Grants for the Art

What are the implications of producing, collecting and sorting data for society and the individual? The works in the exhibition take a critical look at systematic ambiguity within the media dominated era we live in.

Including video, sound and sculptural installations, the works explore those (not entirely) unintended, secondary effects of mediation processes. Such processes unfold in many directions and through many networks. They are complex, opaque, ambiguous: as a matter of fact, even the simple action of counting becomes significant in a different way, if strategically positioned in the mechanism it is part of.

Alan Warburton’s Homo Economicus is an installation with video and sculpture. Focusing on the ideas of men who work in the City of London financial district, and how they both modify and commodify their own bodies. The work intentionally conflates the corporate and the corporeal, questioning male self-worth and its apparent apotheosis in the hyper-competitive financial services industry.

If You Die in Roblox You Die IRL is an adaptive audio/visual installation by Album Corp. With visuals and text by Jacob Samuel and music by Klein, the virtual world presented will construct and dissemble itself according to the statistics created by live birth and death rates. Based on online gaming environments and on what is left over by these when they cease to be used, the installation will be constantly mutating its visuals— leaving it up to the viewer how to interpret that information.

FRAUD's Carbon Rifts is an installation that functions like an interface into carbon emissions measurement and valuation, and an experimental archaeology of wrecks, including resource extraction, waste management, indentured labour and slavery. It is an art-led enquiry into forest and foreshores as salvage sites for carbon that questions the systemic violence of the green economy.

Biographies

Alan Warburton's technologically articulate practice has involved the production of short films, prints, sculptures, 3D models, AR and VR experiences. Central to his work is a critically literate understanding of the commercial computer generated (CG) image, which he explores through focused software studies and video essays.

Alan studied Critical Fine Art Practice at Brighton University from 2002 - 2005, then Digital VFX at Escape Studios in 2007. He is currently undertaking a practice based New Media MA at London South Bank University and part of their Centre for the Study of the Networked Image.  He has exhibited, screened and broadcast internationally, most notably at institutions and festivals including The Photographers' Gallery, Southbank Centre, The Barbican, Carnegie Museum of Art, Transmediale, National Gallery of Victoria, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Ars Electronica and The Austrian Film Museum.
