Making It: Resolve Collective

How to build a creative practice from nothing, knowing your worth, and why your community is your greatest resource.

RESOLVE is an interdisciplinary design collective combining art, architecture, engineering and technology to address social challenges. Founded by brothers Seth and Akil, who grew up in Streatham, South London, their clients include the Wellcome Collection, Tate Modern and Mosaic Rooms.

Upgrade Yourself presenter Betty Douglas heads to RESOLVE's new workspace in Silvertown, London to meet the collective — and gets stuck in assembling furniture from salvaged materials along the way.

You have to work based on something that you can't see or touch. It's intangible. And on top of that, it might not come true.

Starting out in Brixton in 2016, RESOLVE built their practice from the ground up — holding down full-time jobs, facing repeated rejection, and making real sacrifices along the way. Rooted in a belief that materials carry meaning and that communities should shape the spaces they inhabit, they've developed a way of working that puts reciprocity, equity and collective thinking at its heart.
